Former headteacher Leon Hady has trained over 8,000 teachers through Guide Education, which is about to launch a freeparentingcourse on how to address race issues with your children. “It can feel like a minefield for parents who often struggle to know what to say that’s age appropriate,” said the father-of-three.
He warned that telling very young kids too much about the horrors of racism can be traumatic. “Children don’t possess the critical thinking to really understand that what they see on a TV screen is happening in a far away country. Kids are told to trust the police, so to be told about police brutality can be frightening. Experts blame over-exposure to stuff on the internet on increasing anxiety in children.”
